Manchester United will reportedly go all out and try to sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane this summer as they look to try and shore up their defense. The Red Devils currently need a proven central defensive star who will become partners to Harry Maguire and they have already created a list of defensive options they want to sign.
Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham has been linked with an unsurprising move away from the club, according to reports. The English striker has fallen out of favor with manager Thomas Tuchel and it does not look like he will regain his spot in the first team, with the German manager preferring to go with Timo Werner in his attack. Abraham was a star player under Frank Lampard until he lost his place in the team after the arrival of Werner, and since then, he has been unable to convince the past and current managers that he can be the starting striker.
Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has revealed that he tried to sign West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice while he was the Blues boss. Rice was strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge last summer but the Blues were not able to pull off a move for him.
Lampard spoke to Goal about the failure to sign Rice. According to the ex-Chelsea manager, it was an open secret that he is a big fan of the West Ham player and that his club didn’t want to let him leave last summer. Lampard said the Hammers know they have a quality player on their hands. He praised Rice whom he described as a leader.
It is expected to be a busy summer transfer window for clubs across Europe and Chelsea will not be exempted. Blues manager Thomas Tuchel is reportedly keen to get a couple of new signings to the club and will be expected to strengthen some key departments in the squad, including the defensive department and especially the attacking department.
The German manager is currently enjoying life at Stamford Bridge and is yet to taste defeat since being appointed as the new manager of the club following the sacking of former manager Frank Lampard, and according to reports, even though he is happy with his current crop of players, it will not stop him from venturing into the transfer market and get the players he wants at the club.
The Telegraph is reporting that London clubs Chelsea and Arsenal are both highly interested in Snapping up Inter Milan’s brilliant defender Achraf Hakimi in the summer. Hakimi only joined Inter from Spanish La Liga giants Real Madrid last summer in a £34 million move but has constantly been linked with a move away from Italy due to the fine performances he has been putting in for Antonio Conte’s side.
Leeds United are back to winning ways in the league after they secured a convincing win over Southampton at home in their outstanding game in the Premier League. The newly promoted team had lost their last two games in the competition against Arsenal and Wolves before the Southampton game at Elland Road on Tuesday night. Leeds United had been beaten 4-2 by the Gunners away from home two games ago with Gabonese international Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang getting hattrick for Arsenal. Leeds United then made it two successive league defeats with the slender 1-0 loss at Wolverhampton Wanderers. The only goal of the game came in the second half after an unfortunate own goal from Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier. The Frenchman rebounded the ball into his net unconsciously after he tipped the ferocious shot from Wolves attacker Adama Traore onto the post.
Gianfranco Zola has claimed that Chelsea forward Timo Werner, who has not scored in 12 matches, is best utilised when he is on the flanks. The German international started his time with Chelsea in a flourish after scoring a string of goals. All of his four league goals for Chelsea came several months ago. In order to try and reclaim his form, Lampard has tried to utilise Werner in a number of positions. The striker was played as the number nine in the recent match against Manchester City, which ended as a 3-1 loss. Werner was once again poor with not a great deal of offensive threat.
Arsenal had a disappointing outing against London rivals Crystal Palace last night in the Premier League as their recent good run came to an end but the return of Ghanaian international Thomas Partey to the Arsenal team was one of the few positives for the Gunners on the night. Thomas Partey has had some troubles with staying fit for the Gunners and fans would be hoping that his recent fitness issues are behind him after his second half introduction to the Palace game. He came on in place of Dani Ceballos for the final 21 minutes of the game as Arsenal and Crystal Palace failed to score a goal in their London Derby clash.
Arsenal made the headlines on the final day of last summer’s transfer window when they paid €50m (£45m) to sign Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid in the Spanish league. The Spanish La Liga leaders were not willing to let Thomas Partey leave the club but they had no choice after Arsenal activated his release clause.
Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has heaped praise on former club Chelsea for the progress made under manager Frank Lampard. Bamford recently found the back of the net against the Blues in the Premier League, but the west London side made a terrific comeback to three goals in what ended up as a comfortable win.
The Blues are currently one of the most in-form teams in the Premier League and Bamford has acknowledged that the Whites were outplayed by the capital outfit, he told The Athletic’s Ornstein and Chapman Podcast: “We nit-pick everything really. Our physical stats weren’t bad but Chelsea really outperformed what they’ve done the rest of the season, in terms of physically. Then obviously we know about Chelsea how good they are. ‘I think that’s probably the best team we’ve played this year.”
