As a result, the Hornets had no concerns over sanctioning his departure to Chinese side Changchun Yatai from where Ighalo made the move to Shenhua. The 30-year-old does not have the expectations on his shoulders with the temporary deal but a strong impact with the club could enhance his prospects of turning the move into a permanent one in four months’ time. Ighalo has begun working on his fitness following the loan switch but it is unclear whether he could make his debut against Chelsea after the winter break.

Manchester United’s winter signing Odion Ighalo has raved about the young forwards at Old Trafford. The Nigeria international made the loan move from Shanghai Shenhua before the transfer deadline and he has been touted to compete for the striker’s role alongside Anthony Martial with Marcus Rashford currently on the sidelines with a back injury.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Ighalo spoke brightly about the trio of Mason Greenwood, Martial and Rashford, who have been pivotal to the club’s exploits upfront, he told: “These players are great players. Greenwood is a very good player; young, very good left foot, I’ve watched some of his game. Martial is very skilful, he can do so much magic with the ball and Rashford I think is, for me, one of the best, if not the best, young players in Europe right now. So, for me, it is just a plus to the team, to work hard with these guys and make sure we end the season very well.”

Ighalo had a promising Premier League stint with Watford three years ago but the spell could be divided into two different parts. The Nigerian had a promising debut season in the top-flight where he scored 15 goals but he could not replicate the feat during the forthcoming campaign where he managed just one goal from 18 appearances.
