Gianfranco Zola has claimed that Chelsea forward Timo Werner, who has not scored in 12 matches, is best utilised when he is on the flanks. The German international started his time with Chelsea in a flourish after scoring a string of goals. All of his four league goals for Chelsea came several months ago. In order to try and reclaim his form, Lampard has tried to utilise Werner in a number of positions. The striker was played as the number nine in the recent match against Manchester City, which ended as a 3-1 loss. Werner was once again poor with not a great deal of offensive threat.

The striker has been immensely prolific throughout his career but he has been struggling to get the right kind of ingredients at Chelsea. Due to the number of offensive options available for Lampard, it appears that the Chelsea boss is not sure about the best position for Werner.Zola has tried to help his former teammate out by suggesting that the German international would be better off playing in the left side of the attacking three.

The 24-year-old has impressedZola with his abilities on and off the ball. In recent weeks, the striker has been looking very tired and this could be attributed to his poor form.

I think Werner has got very good qualities, unbelievable qualities, but in my opinion he plays best when he’s got a lot of pitch in front of him, when he has to attack the space. The problem with Chelsea is that there many times you play a team that is defending deep; that is a different matter and in that case players with the ability of Olivier Giroud or Tammy Abraham, they can do better in that contest. So if you want to play Werner, maybe it’s right to play him in the wide areas,” said Zola.
